Future Urban Farmers Academy - Earn a Certificate in Urban Farming!

Academy Program Details

Classes meet online from 6 to 7 pm on Thursdays from December through April. 

We will also hold 6 to 8 in-person workshops and work days throughout the session, dates TBD. These activities will take place in Long Beach, CA and Covina, CA and are optional, but it is strongly recommended that students plan to attend on at least two dates.

Our first program session launches with an introductory class on Thursday, December 14th! Classes will resume after the holidays on the following dates:

  • Urban Ag in SoCal: Challenges and Opportunities
  • Seed Starting and Plant Propagation Techniques
  • Irrigation Installation Basics and Troubleshooting
  • Soil Building and Regenerative Agriculture
  • Plant Health, Fertilization, and Maintenance
  • Weed Management
  • Composting: Piles, Bins, and Worm Systems
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Urban Farm Location and Planning
  • Selecting and Planting Fruit Trees
  • Food Security and Food Justice in Your Community
  • Seeking Funding and Support for Nonprofit Farms

Students who complete the course will receive a certificate in urban farming, as well as guidance and assistance in seeking employment or further training. This program is offered at no cost thanks to funding from the USDA.
